| Location |
The erector spinae muscles run vertically along either side of the spine, from the head to the pelvis |
| Action |
Straightens the lower spine, moving the hips back and away from the waist; straightens the back from a rounded posture |
| Other names |
Erector spinae |
| Notes |
The muscles of the lower back are slow to recover from weight training, so there should be plenty of rest time between sessions which work this area directly or indirectly.
The erector spinae are arranged in three columns: the spinalis closest to the spine, the iliocostalis furthest from the spine, and the longissimus in between. Each of these has three vertical parts from the capitis section at the head and upper neck, to the lumborum section at the lower back. |
