Muscles > Shoulders > Lateral deltoid

Part of the Shoulders muscle group
Location At the side of the shoulder
Action Lifts the arm to the side, and assists in press movements
Other names Side delt
Notes Development of the side deltoids helps create a broad, wide-shouldered appearance.

The lateral deltoid is a multipennate muscle, meaning it consists of many fibers in a feather-like arrangement. Pennate muscles contract little and are powerful only over short distances, so the anterior and posterior deltoids assist the lateral deltoid in raising the arms. A variety of angles ensures that all of the pennate fibers are worked.
